Amethyst Princess Tiara

This is a very pretty and unusual tiara. It looks complicated but is actually quite easy to make.
It uses a combination of Semi-precious Amethyst chips, Fresh-water Pearls, Swarovskis and Fire-Polished Crystals.
You could easily substitute other semi-precious chips instead of Amethyst. For example, Rose Quartz, which is the traditional stone of love and is very appropriate for a wedding.
To make this tiara you will need
- 1 Tiara band (crown style)
- 36 Amethyst Chips
- 20 Oval 6mm Cream Fresh water Pearls
- 3 Oval 6mm Peacock Fresh water Pearls
- 9 Clear Crystal 6mm Swarovski Bicones (AB)
- 19Tanzanite 6mm Swarovski Bicones (AB)
- 9 Tanzanite 4mm Swarovski Bicones (AB)
- 9 Purple Velvet 4mm Swarovski Bicones (AB)
- 9 Crystal 4mm Fire-Polished Beads (AB)
- 0.8mm thick silver plated wire
- 0.6mm thick silver plated wire
- 0.4mm thick silver plated wire
- Chain nose pliers
- Round nose pliers
If you can't get hold of the beads above then other beads in the same colour can be substituted.
Instructions

Step 1 - Start with the tall bead stem in the centre
You are going to make the central group of stems first and then the ones at each side. As you make each stem lay it out on the table in the order it will be attached to the base. This will make it easier to assemble the tiara at the end.
Cut approximately 10cm of 0.8mm wire and straighten it to remove any kinks.
For an effective wire straightening technique please see our wire straightening tutorial page.
On one end of the wire turn a small loop.

Starting at the other end thread on:
- 1 Tanzanite AB 4mm Swarovski Crystal
- 1 Crystal AB 4mm Fire-Polished Bead
- 1 Purple Velvet AB 4mm Swarovski Crystal
- 1 Cream oval pearl
- 1 Tanzanite AB 6mm Swarovski Crystal
- 1 White cream pearl
- 1 Clear Crystal AB 6mm Swarovski Crystal
- 1 Peacock Pearl
- 1 Tanzanite AB 6mm Swarovski Crystal
- 1 Cream oval pearl
- 1 Tanzanite AB 6mm Swarovski Crystal
TIP: Pearls often have small holes, if you have trouble passing the wire through enlarge the hole with a bead reamer or use 0.6 mm thick wire.
You will be left with a length of wire at the bottom. Do not cut this off, it is what you will use to attach the stem to the tiara band.
Make 1 of these and put to one side.

Step 2 - Make the stems either side of the central stem.
Cut approximately 20cm of 0.6mm wire.
Thread on a Tanzanite 6mm swarovski bead and slide it to the centre of the wire. Bend the wire around it to form a 'u' shape.
Hold the ends of the wire with a pair of chain nose pliers in one hand. Hold the bead between the thumb and finger of your other hand.
Turn the bead while holding the ends of the wire steady with the pliers.

You will end up with a twisted stem of wire with a bead on top.
Make 2 of these stems.
Start to lay out the stems on the table in front of you. Place them either side of the central stem you made in step 1 (see layout diagram below).

Step 3 - Make the Amethyst chip stem.
Cut approximately 20cm of 0.6mm wire.
Thread on 3 Amethyst chips and slide them to the centre of the wire. Bend the wire around them to form a 'u' shape.
Twist the wire as in Step 2 above.
Make 2 of these and lay them either side of the stems you made in step 2.
