Freshwater pearls are cultured pearls made by placing an irritant into a freshwater mollusc. The mollusc reacts by forming a layer of nacre, or mother of pearl, around the irritant. Over time it will lay down several layers of nacre to create a pearl.
Freshwater pearls can take up to six years to grow and come in a variety of different shapes and sizes. For more information see our About Freshwater Cultured Pearls page.
